US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Pope Leo XIV over his comments on peace and criticism of the US war on Iran. The pope, who arrived in Cameroon on Wednesday, delivered a speech calling for an end to sectarian conflict in the country. In his remarks, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of breaking the “chains of corruption” and taking a bold leap forward towards peace and justice.
Pope Leo is currently on a 10-day tour of Africa, where he has been advocating for peace, anticorruption, and social justice. His visit to Cameroon includes a three-day meeting with local leaders in the northwest city of Bamenda, which has seen fighting from separatist forces. The pope’s comments on issues such as migrant rights and criticism of US-Israeli military actions have sparked tension with the Trump administration.
In response to Pope Leo’s criticisms, President Trump has made several social media posts accusing the pope of being “weak on crime” and too close to the political left. Vice President JD Vance has also stated that the pope should be cautious in his comments on theology. The US president has also shared a since-deleted image on social media depicting himself as Jesus Christ.
Pope Leo has responded diplomatically to these attacks, stating that he has “no fear” of the Trump administration and will continue to advocate for peace and criticism of war. In an earlier statement, Pope Leo emphasized the importance of promoting tolerance and unity in a world plagued by conflict.
