Portugal votes for new president with potential far-right candidate leading polls

Portugal to Hold Presidential Election, Far-Right Candidate in Running

A presidential election is underway in Portugal, with voters casting ballots in the first round. The election features 11 candidates, including Andre Ventura, leader of the far-right Chega party, which is currently the second-largest party in parliament. According to polls, Ventura is predicted to top the first-round vote but may lose in a potential runoff on February 8.

The president of Portugal serves as a largely ceremonial figurehead with limited executive power. However, the head of state has some influential tools, including the ability to veto legislation from parliament and dissolve the parliament if necessary. The current president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is set to step down after serving two five-year terms.

Chega’s surge in popularity has led to its emergence as a major force in Portuguese politics, with Ventura focusing on issues such as immigration. During his campaign, Ventura displayed xenophobic billboards, including messages targeting immigrants and those receiving welfare benefits.

Other prominent candidates include Luis Marques Mendes from the Social Democratic Party and Antonio Jose Seguro of the Socialist Party. The election is not expected to have a significant impact on the European Union, given Portugal’s relatively small contribution to the EU’s economy and military capabilities.
