Manchester United secures Champions League spot after Sunday’s victory over Liverpool.
Manchester United has secured a return to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) following a 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday. This marks their first appearance in the competition since 2021. The team is now guaranteed a spot in next season’s UCL, along with Arsenal and Manchester City, who have already qualified.
A sixth team may also secure a spot in the Champions League through the European Performance Spot (EPS). If Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth in the league, the sixth-placed team will take the EPS spot. Alternatively, if Villa finish fourth and win the Europa League, the EPS spot will not be passed down to the sixth-placed team.
Nottingham Forest currently trails Villa 1-0 in their Europa League semifinal, with the second leg scheduled for Thursday at Villa Park. If Forest were to win the Europa League, they would become the sixth English team to qualify for the Champions League.
Liverpool is currently fourth in the league, with 58 points from 35 games. They are six points ahead of Bournemouth, who are in sixth place. Liverpool would need a point to secure qualification if Bournemouth lose or draw their next game. However, if Bournemouth win, Liverpool would require four more points.
Aston Villa is fifth in the league, also with 58 points from 35 games. They trail Liverpool on goal difference and would only need a point to secure qualification if Bournemouth lose or draw their next game. The team’s chances of finishing in the top five seem slim due to the six-point gap between them and Liverpool.
Bournemouth has bolstered their push for UCL qualification with a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, leaving them with 52 points from 35 games. However, they face an uphill battle to secure a top-five finish, given the six-point gap between them and Liverpool. Brentford and Brighton are also in contention for sixth place, with the Bees currently seventh and the Seagulls eighth.
Chelsea is ninth in the league, with 48 points from 35 games. The team has lost their last six Premier League games and faces a challenging run-in to finish the season.
