Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis Wins Re-Election
Philip Davis will continue as prime minister of the Bahamas after his party, the Progressive Liberal Party, secured a victory in early elections. The results were announced late Tuesday, with Davis celebrating the outcome by addressing supporters in Nassau.
According to official tallies, the Progressive Liberal Party is expected to win more than 30 of the 41 seats in the Bahamian Parliament. Official results have yet to be released, but Davis’s party has maintained its lead since early tallies were announced.
Davis will become the first prime minister to retain his post for a consecutive term in nearly three decades, following in the footsteps of Hubert Ingraham of the Free National Movement (FNM). The current opposition leader, Michael Pintard of the FNM, conceded defeat in a phone call to Davis, stating that “the Bahamian people made their choice.”
Pintard’s party lost the election, but he will retain his seat in Parliament. The snap election was called early due to concerns about potential disruptions during the Atlantic hurricane season.
In the lead-up to the vote, the Progressive Liberal Party held 32 of the 39 seats in the House of Assembly. Two new constituencies were created for this year’s election, increasing the number of seats from 39 to 41.
The election was dominated by issues such as the cost of living, housing access, crime, immigration, and healthcare access. Davis had proposed lifting the value-added tax on food in grocery stores, which sparked criticism that it would not alleviate the strain on Bahamians’ bank accounts.
