French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has instructed state prosecutors to launch an investigation into allegations of abuse against French nationals who were arrested during a military raid on an aid flotilla bound for Gaza.
The incident occurred earlier this month, when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters off the coast of Cyprus. Over 400 people from more than 40 countries were arrested, including 37 French nationals. According to reports, the activists described their arrest as “extremely violent”, “humiliating” and “dehumanising”.
French Foreign Minister Barrot has stated that based on a report from the Consul General in Turkey, which detailed allegations of sexual violence, exposure to cold temperatures, beatings, and repeated humiliation against French nationals, these acts are likely to constitute criminal offences.
The investigation was launched after Barrot referred the matter to the public prosecutor. The incident has sparked international criticism, with several allies expressing concerns over Israel’s treatment of activists.
French nationals who were arrested have reported suffering significant abuse, including physical violence and sexual humiliation. Lawyers for French flotilla activists have announced plans to file a separate complaint on behalf of their clients over allegations of rape, torture and humiliation.
The incident has also led to diplomatic tensions between France and Israel, with the French government summoning the Israeli ambassador over the matter. The Global Sumud Flotilla, which organized the aid shipment, has documented at least 15 cases of sexual abuse.
