Russian President Vladimir Putin Arrives in China for Two-Day Visit
Moscow, China - Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing on Tuesday evening for a two-day visit, marking the second face-to-face meeting he has held with Chinese President Xi Jinping in less than a year. The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between Russia and China.
The treaty formalized ties between the two countries following decades of ideological rivalry and mutual suspicion. Putin’s visit comes amid efforts by both Moscow and Beijing to navigate complex relations with the United States, which has been critical of their actions in Ukraine and other regions.
Analysts note that the unpredictability of US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy has contributed to Russia and China’s growing partnership. The two countries are also navigating tensions over Iran and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crisis that has affected global energy markets.
China has become an important energy supplier for Russia, with bilateral trade reaching $237 billion in 2024. However, the relationship is not without its challenges, as China’s economy is significantly larger than Russia’s, giving Beijing considerable leverage in negotiations.
Xi Jinping and Putin have invested heavily in maintaining personal ties, despite both leaders being infrequent international travelers. The two have repeatedly referred to each other as “friends” and have strengthened their cooperation on various fronts, including politics, economics, defense, and culture.
The visit marks a significant development in the relationship between Russia and China, which has been shaped by decades of ideological rivalry and mutual suspicion.
