Qatar criticizes UN for failing to prevent Iranian attacks

Qatar’s Ambassador to the UN Condemns Iranian Drone Strikes as Violation of International Law

Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s ambassador to the United Nations, has condemned Iran’s recent drone and missile strikes across the Gulf region as a “clear violation of international law and the UN Charter”. The comments were made at a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York.

The Iranian attacks have targeted various countries in the Middle East, including those in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), resulting in significant damage to civilian infrastructure. The strikes have also disrupted energy production and grounded flights for several days.

According to reports, the US has confirmed the loss of eight US service members in the Iranian attacks since the war began on February 28. Other regional countries, such as Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, have also reported deaths.

The UN Security Council recently voted in favour of a draft resolution condemning the wave of Iranian attacks on GCC countries. The resolution calls for immediate action to halt the attacks.

In response to the ongoing conflict, Gulf leaders and their Western allies have expressed condemnation of the Iranian strikes. Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said condemned the strikes on his country’s territory in a call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The situation remains tense, with reports of continued Iranian attacks and responses from regional countries. Qatar has also responded to more Iranian firings, saying it thwarted three waves of missile attacks.

The UN Security Council is expected to take further action on the matter.
