Qatar Official Clarifies LNG Production Halt Amid Iranian Strikes
A senior Qatari official has denied claims that the country’s decision to suspend liquefied natural gas (LNG) production was motivated by a desire to influence US energy prices. In a statement released on Thursday, the official stated that Qatar prioritizes people’s safety over political or economic gain.
Following an Iranian drone attack on two sites in Mesaieed Industrial City and Ras Laffan, QatarEnergy suspended LNG production last week. The incident has strained the global LNG market, with Qatar supplying 20 percent of the world’s LNG. According to the Ministry of Defence, the drones targeted a water tank at a power plant and an energy facility belonging to QatarEnergy.
The official also addressed allegations made by Amit Segal, an Israeli chief political analyst, that Qatar’s decision was part of a coordinated effort with Iran to pressure an end to the war. The official stated that these claims were “false reports” and part of a pattern of misinformation spread by Segal in recent days. Specifically, Segal had previously claimed that Qatar attacked Iran, which the official described as “highly irresponsible”.
The Qatari official emphasized that at a time when regional tensions are high, it is essential to prioritize de-escalation efforts. They noted that narratives aimed at creating friction in the region set a “dangerous precedent” and should be addressed for their “reckless and malign intent”.
