Qatari Ministry Engages with Mediators to Reopen Rafah Crossing
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that diplomatic efforts are underway to reopen the Rafah crossing into besieged Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. According to Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, communications with mediators are ongoing.
A truce agreement, which went into effect on October 10, included reopening the Rafah crossing as a condition. However, the crossing has remained closed despite repeated attempts by humanitarian groups to deliver aid. Israeli restrictions continue to hamper aid deliveries, according to these groups.
The Rafah crossing had previously been Gaza’s sole connection to the outside world until it was occupied by the Israeli military in May 2024. A recent rumor suggested that Israel might reopen the crossing in both directions following pressure from US President Donald Trump. However, this has not yet materialized.
Palestinians have expressed hope for the reopening of the crossing, citing its importance for medical treatment and education. Many families see it as an opportunity to reunite with family members who have been separated due to the conflict. Despite these hopes, many are skeptical due to past experiences where announcements about reopening were met with swift closure.
Meanwhile, Israel has continued to bomb Gaza in violation of the ceasefire, resulting in the deaths of at least 422 Palestinians since the truce came into effect. On Monday, Israeli forces bombed a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians, killing a five-year-old girl and her uncle, as well as four others.
