QatarEnergy CEO Warned US and Industry Officials of Potential Energy Attack

QatarEnergy CEO Saad al-Kaabi has disclosed that he had previously warned US officials and energy executives about the potential consequences of an attack on Iranian oil and gas facilities. In an interview with Reuters, al-Kaabi stated that he had communicated his concerns to US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and other executives from oil and gas companies partnered with QatarEnergy.
Al-Kaabi also mentioned that he had been in regular contact with these officials, reminding them of the potential risks associated with attacks on energy infrastructure. However, it appears that some US officials were not aware of an Israeli attack on Iran’s South Pars gasfield prior to its occurrence.
In response to the attack, QatarEnergy has reported significant disruptions to its operations, including a 17% reduction in export capacity. The company’s LNG complex at Ras Laffan Industrial City was targeted, resulting in the destruction of key equipment and potentially impacting LNG deliveries to Europe and Asia for up to five years.
According to White House spokesperson Taylor Roger, US President Donald Trump and his energy team were aware of the potential short-term disruptions to oil and gas supply during the ongoing operations in Iran. However, it is unclear whether they had anticipated the specific timing and impact of the attack on QatarEnergy’s facilities.
QatarEnergy’s production has been suspended due to the attack, but it is expected that hostilities will need to cease before production can resume. Even then, it may take several months for the company to fully recover from the disruption.
