Rapper Ghalis Israel comments spark criticism at Winter Olympics

Italian Rapper Ghali to Perform at Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics officially opened on Monday, with Italian rapper Ghali set to perform at the event’s opening ceremony. However, Ghali’s inclusion has sparked controversy in Italy due to his past comments on Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Ghali, born in Milan to Tunisian parents, was criticized by members of Italy’s right-wing League party for his remarks during a 2022 song contest. The comments, which called for a “stop to the genocide” in reference to Israel’s actions in Gaza, were deemed inflammatory by some.

Sport Minister Andrea Abodi expressed his disagreement with Ghali’s views and stated that he did not expect the Olympic stage to be used to make a political point. Abodi emphasized the importance of a country being able to absorb differing opinions without incident.

Ghali is scheduled to perform alongside other notable artists, including tenor Andrea Bocelli and US pop singer Mariah Carey, at the San Siro stadium on February 6. The event is expected to draw a large audience, with Ghali’s performance potentially appealing to a younger demographic.

The controversy surrounding Ghali’s inclusion has raised questions about the intersection of sports and politics. As the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics continue, it remains to be seen how this issue will be addressed.
