Raul Castro reportedly involved in US-Cuba oil blockade negotiations

Cuba and US Hold Talks Amid Tensions

Talks between Cuba and the United States are underway, according to Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel. The discussions come amid heightened tensions between the two nations.

Diaz-Canel stated that the talks are in their early stages, as nationwide blackouts continue due to an oil blockade implemented by US President Donald Trump. The announcement was made during a videotaped interview with Diaz-Canel, which was shared by state media.

In the interview, Diaz-Canel predicted that any process leading to an agreement would be lengthy. He emphasized the need for building channels for dialogue and common agendas of interest between the parties involved. Castro, who is still considered the most powerful person in Cuba, has guided the country’s approach to these talks.

Raul Castro, a former president of Cuba, led historic talks with former US President Barack Obama in 2014, resulting in the reopening of embassies and re-establishment of diplomatic relations. The US embargo on Cuba remains in place, despite initial threats being softened.

The island has not received fuel shipments for three months, leading to prolonged power outages and economic disruption. Francisco Pichon, resident coordinator of the United Nations in Cuba, warned of a “humanitarian crisis” if the situation continues to deteriorate. The UN estimates that $94m are needed to address the energy crisis and hurricane damage from last year.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concern over the health situation in Cuba, stating that the delivery of health services is at risk.
