Real Madrid and Barcelona Draw, Leaving Title Race in Balance
Real Madrid drew 1-1 against mid-table Girona in La Liga on Friday, extending the hosts’ winless run to three games in all competitions. The draw gave leaders Barcelona the opportunity to move nine points clear at the top of the table if they beat Espanyol on Saturday.
Federico Valverde scored for Real Madrid six minutes after halftime, but Girona levelled through Thomas Lemar in the 62nd minute. The result means Barcelona can now stretch their advantage with seven matches left to play.
Real Madrid began the match under pressure, having lost at Mallorca last weekend and trailing Barcelona by seven points. Coach Alvaro Arbeloa opted for a full-strength side despite the Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Bayern Munich looming next Wednesday.
Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr led the line for Real Madrid, with Jude Bellingham in midfield. The team dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances in the first half. Girona’s Azzedine Ounahi came closest before the break with a fierce effort from inside the box.
After halftime, Valverde broke the deadlock with a low strike from the edge of the area. However, Real Madrid’s lead was short-lived as Lemar equalised with a superb shot that flew just inside the right post beyond goalkeeper Andriy Lunin’s dive.
Real Madrid pushed for a winner but struggled to maintain composure, leading to frustration among the crowd. Girona held their shape and frustrated the team, who are now facing an uncertain title race.
