Rohingya Refugees Share Views on Myanmars Election in Exclusive Video Interview

Myanmar’s Election Outcome Unlikely to Impact Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh

The outcome of Myanmar’s recent election is unlikely to significantly alter the circumstances faced by over 1 million Rohingya refugees currently residing in Bangladesh. The United Nations has described the violence that led to their displacement as “genocidal.”

Since the military junta took power in 2021, efforts to repatriate the Rohingya minority have been stalled. The situation remains unchanged for those who fled their homeland.

According to reports from Cox’s Bazar, where many of the refugees are currently residing, there has been no indication that the election outcome will lead to a change in the refugees’ living conditions or prospects for return to Myanmar.

The Rohingya refugees have been living in Bangladesh since 2017, when violence broke out in Myanmar. The UN has repeatedly called on Myanmar’s government to ensure the safe and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingya.

As the situation remains unchanged, the refugees continue to face significant challenges, including limited access to basic necessities such as food, water, and healthcare. The international community continues to monitor the situation and advocate for the rights and well-being of the Rohingya people.

The outcome of Myanmar’s election is expected to have little impact on the lives of those who remain in Bangladesh.
