Tennis Players Seek Increased Prize Money at Roland Garros
A group of top tennis players, including Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff, have expressed disappointment with the prize money offered at the upcoming Roland Garros tournament. The event is scheduled to take place in Paris on May 24.
The players have also made other demands, including better representation, healthcare, and pensions. These requests were not addressed by officials, according to the group.
According to the French Open’s announcement last month, the prize money for Roland Garros increased by about 10 percent, with a total pot of 61.7 million euros ($72.1m). However, the players claim that their share of tournament revenue has declined from 15.5 percent in 2024 to 14.9 percent projected in 2026.
The statement also notes that despite a 14 percent year-on-year increase in revenue for Roland Garros, prize money rose by only 5.4 percent. This resulted in players’ share of revenue decreasing to 14.3 percent.
The group has requested a higher percentage of prize money, similar to the ATP and WTA Combined 1000 events, which would bring the Grand Slams into line with other major international sports.
In addition to increased prize money, the players have also sought better representation, healthcare, and pensions. However, they claim that officials have not responded to their proposals on these matters.
The group of players remains united in their desire for meaningful progress, both in terms of fair financial distribution and governance. They have expressed frustration with the lack of response to their proposals and the absence of player consultation in decision-making processes.
