US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Addresses European Leaders on Western Civilization and Global Cooperation
At the annual Munich Security Conference, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of collaboration between the US and European countries in building a “new Western century.” He described the relationship as “civilisational,” stating that both nations are part of one civilization. This comes after over a year of President Donald Trump’s rhetoric on mass immigration in Europe and his administration’s National Security Strategy, which warns of “civilisational erasure” in Europe.
Rubio highlighted several key areas he believes European countries should address, including ending policies deemed responsible for Europe’s post-war decline, creating new supply chains to reduce reliance on countries like China, and limiting mass migration. He argued that the current liberal values in Europe are under threat from mass migration, which is eroding Western civilization.
The US diplomat also emphasized the need for a “Western supply chain” for critical minerals, citing concerns about China’s control over these essential resources. This initiative is part of a new Critical Minerals Ministerial, a US-led effort to build alliances and counter China’s influence in global mineral markets.
European leaders are grappling with the rise of far-right parties and the implications of Rubio’s remarks on transatlantic relations. The top US diplomat’s speech suggests that the US under Trump aims to establish a partnership with Europe based on shared values, but also implies a desire for European countries to accept a more assertive role in global affairs.
The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft has analyzed Rubio’s remarks, stating that they reveal a “civilisational divide” between the West and other civilizations. The US initiative aims to restore Western dominance over other nations, according to this analysis.
