Russia and Ukraine have announced competing unilateral ceasefires in their four-year war.
On Monday, Russia declared a ceasefire from May 8-9, coinciding with its traditional Victory Day parade in Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the ceasefire would be effective during this period. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a separate ceasefire starting at midnight on Tuesday, May 5.
The Ukrainian president clarified that he had not received an official notice from Russia regarding the proposed ceasefire and expressed skepticism about its validity. He stated that Ukraine would observe the ceasefire regime as scheduled, despite concerns about potential attacks during this time.
Russia’s Defence Ministry warned Ukraine against launching any attacks during its declared ceasefire, stating that it would take necessary measures to ensure public safety. The ministry also issued a warning to Kyiv residents and foreign diplomatic staff, advising them to leave the city promptly in case of a retaliatory missile strike.
According to Russian officials, the announced ceasefire was intended as a precautionary measure due to concerns about potential Ukrainian strikes during the Victory Day anniversary. However, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy suggested that Russia’s decision not to display military equipment at the parade may be indicative of its growing weakness and fear of Ukrainian drones.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in significant human losses, with hundreds of thousands of people killed and millions displaced since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
