Russian National Extradited from UAE After Friday’s Attack
Lyubomir Korba, a Russian national accused of shooting a high-ranking military official, has been taken into custody and extradited from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. According to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Korba was arrested and detained in Dubai with assistance from UAE partners.
Korba is alleged to have ambushed and shot Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, Russia’s deputy military intelligence chief, in his Moscow apartment building on Friday. Alekseyev suffered wounds in his arm, leg, and chest and has undergone surgery, according to Russian media reports.
An accomplice was arrested in Moscow, while another individual, a woman, crossed into Ukraine. The FSB stated that a search for the organisers of the attack is ongoing.
Russian officials have accused Ukraine of being behind the attack, which occurred a day after peace talks involving Russian, Ukrainian, and US officials concluded in Abu Dhabi with a prisoner swap but no breakthrough on ending Russia’s four-year war on Ukraine.
The incident is part of a series of attacks on senior Russian military officers attributed to Ukraine. In December, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed by a car bomb, while in April, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed by a bomb placed in his car.
Korba’s arrest comes as the Ministry of Defence reported that Russian forces captured two more villages in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Sumy regions. The main obstacle in peace negotiations remains the future status of territory in eastern Ukraine, with Moscow demanding Kyiv cede control over the fifth of the Donetsk region it still controls.
Trilateral negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks, according to Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov. US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine and Russia a June deadline to end the war.
