Russia’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi Visits Moscow Amid Ongoing Conflict
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently visited Russia, sparking renewed questions about the country’s stance on the conflict between Iran and the United States-Israel alliance. The visit is not unexpected, given the close diplomatic ties between the two nations, as outlined in the 2025 treaty signed by them.
Russia’s position on the conflict has been shaped more significantly by its backing of Iran and opposition to military escalation than by any military aid provided to Tehran. This approach has yielded benefits for Moscow, including increased oil prices and a diversion of attention away from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
However, Russia is aware that these short-term gains do not address the need to restructure its economy in response to Western sanctions. The country’s focus remains on resolving the conflict and mitigating its negative consequences, which include potential humanitarian crises, global economic slowdowns, and financial instability.
Tehran appears to view Moscow’s position as aligned with its interests, having successfully weathered a major military attack by the US and Israel. Iran has also secured a favorable diplomatic position, with many major powers showing reluctance to participate in demining operations or other activities related to the conflict.
China strongly opposes any military action, while India has shown little enthusiasm for the war due to its significant economic ties with Iran. The US and Israel, on the other hand, have faced diplomatic isolation as a result of their actions.
Russia’s support helps to break this current diplomatic isolation, reinforced by Araghchi’s visit to Moscow. However, the situation remains highly fragile and dangerous, particularly for Iran. Despite the weakness of the anti-Iran coalition, the US retains broad scope to carry out military strikes at its discretion.
