Ukraine Experiences Overnight Attacks by Russian Drones
Russian drones targeted Ukraine’s main Black Sea port in Odesa and a railway in Zaporizhia, resulting in damage to civilian infrastructure. According to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba, the attacks occurred overnight and damaged berths, warehouses, railway infrastructure, and port operators’ facilities at the Odesa port. Additionally, an attack on a sorting yard at the Zaporizhia-Live station killed one assistant train driver and injured another.
Kuleba stated that the Russian attacks are “another proof of terrorism.” The incident occurred as Ukraine prepares to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1986 Chornobyl disaster. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko reported that 35 Kinzhals – Russian air-launched ballistic missiles – were detected near the Chornobyl facility and the Khmelnytskyi plant.
The Russian military launched several drones and missiles on a flight path near the disused Chornobyl nuclear plant, elevating the risk of a significant accident. Kravchenko stated that the launches cannot be explained by any military considerations, suggesting they were carried out solely for intimidation and terror.
In response to the attacks, Ukraine’s army reported downing 189 out of 215 Russian drones overnight. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed to have destroyed 155 Ukrainian drones. A separate incident in Russia resulted in two deaths from a Ukrainian drone attack in the city of Syzran.
The situation remains tense, with ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia stalled due to differences over territory. Ukraine has proposed freezing the conflict along current front lines, but Russia has rejected this proposal.
