Russia Returns Bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian Soldiers to Ukraine

Ukraine and Russia Confirm Soldier Body Exchange

A prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia has taken place, allowing families to bury their loved ones. According to both countries, 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers’ bodies were transferred to Ukraine, while 38 Russian soldiers’ bodies were transferred to Russia as part of an ongoing agreement.

The exchange is part of a series of agreements reached earlier in the conflict, which aim to facilitate the repatriation of deceased soldiers. Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky stated that the transfer occurred within the framework of the Istanbul agreements.

Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed the handover, stating that “repatriation events took place today” and that 1,000 bodies were returned to Ukraine.

The exchange comes as the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues. The war, launched in February 2022, has shown little sign of abating despite worsening winter conditions. Ukraine’s state weather agency warned that temperatures could drop to -30C (-22F) in the coming days, exacerbating the impact of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Russian attacks have previously left millions of Ukrainians without heating, electricity, and water, pushing parts of the country closer to a humanitarian crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing fresh large-scale strikes on energy targets.

Diplomatic efforts continue, with talks taking place in Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. The Kremlin stated that Moscow is the only venue under consideration for a possible face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
