Russia Announces Retaliation Against EU Decision on Diplomatic Representation
On February 27, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced plans to retaliate against a European Union decision to limit the size of its diplomatic representation in Brussels. The move was seen as a response to the EU’s decision to reduce Moscow’s diplomatic mission from 150 people to 40.
According to Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the EU’s decision is “discriminatory” and will not be ignored. This statement followed an announcement by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who requested that the EU send a fact-finding mission to assess damage to the Druzhba oil pipeline in Ukraine.
The request comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that repairs to the pipeline, which supplies Hungary and Slovakia with oil, are taking an extended period of time due to ongoing Russian attacks. Hungarian Prime Minister Orban’s letter to the EU was seen as a follow-up to this claim.
As of February 27, Russia has been engaged in its war on Ukraine for 1,464 days. The conflict continues to be a major point of tension between Russia and the international community.
