Russia using Belarus territory to bypass Ukraine’s defences, says Zelenskyy

Ukraine Accuses Belarus of Allowing Russian Forces to Circumvent Defenses

In a statement released on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of using territory in Belarus to launch attacks on Ukrainian targets and bypass Kyiv’s defensive systems. According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine has observed equipment being deployed in residential buildings near the border with Belarus, including antennae that guide Russian drones to targets in western regions.

The Ukrainian leader stated that this deployment is a “disregard for human lives” and urged Belarus to stop cooperating with Russia’s aggressive ambitions. The allegations come amid reports of closer coordination between Russia and Belarus in the war on Ukraine.

Satellite imagery analyzed by US researchers suggests that Moscow has likely stationed its new nuclear-capable hypersonic ballistic missiles, Oreshnik, at a former airbase in eastern Belarus. The researchers estimate that the missiles have an estimated range of up to 5,500km and are capable of being deployed from mobile launchers.

The deployment of these missiles is seen as a significant development for Russia’s ability to strike targets in Europe. Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin has acknowledged the deployment of Oreshniks within the country, with estimates suggesting that up to 10 will be deployed.

Russia and Belarus have not commented on the allegations or the satellite imagery report. The situation remains fluid, with both countries maintaining a steadfast alliance despite differing stances on the conflict in Ukraine.
