Ukrainian Officials Report Damage from Recent Russian Drone Attacks
A series of drone attacks by Russia targeted Odesa, Ukraine’s southern port city, resulting in damage to residential buildings and a foreign merchant ship. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least 13 people were injured in the overnight strikes.
The Ukrainian State Emergency Service reported that a married couple, both aged 75, was killed in one of the attacks. Another person was wounded in the incident. The local military administration shared images of damaged buildings, including one engulfed in flames and another with significant structural damage.
Separately, two Russian drones struck a bulk carrier as it navigated through a Ukrainian maritime corridor towards a Black Sea port. The attack triggered a fire on board, which was extinguished by the crew of the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged vessel without injury to anyone.
Russia launched a total of 10 ballistic missiles and 107 drones at Ukrainian territory overnight, according to Ukraine’s Air Force. The air defences destroyed or jammed 96 of the drones, while 10 drones and two ballistic missiles recorded “hits”. Russia claimed that its air defences shot down 10 Ukrainian drones during the same time period.
The attacks occurred as part of a new series of European Union-imposed sanctions targeting Russia’s energy, banking, and trade sectors. The EU also formally approved a 90 billion-euro wartime loan for Ukraine, which is expected to cover about two-thirds of its funding needs for 2026 and 2027.
