Russian Forces Involved in Repelling ISIL Attack at Niger Airport

Moscow Affirms Strong Response to Airport Attack in Niamey, Nigeria

A recent attack on an airport in Niamey, Niger’s capital, has been condemned by Moscow. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian soldiers assisted in repelling the assault, which resulted in the deaths of 20 attackers and injuries to four soldiers. The attack was carried out by a group claiming affiliation with the Islamic State (ISIS).

Russian officials stated that the joint efforts of the African Corps and Nigerien armed forces led to the successful defense of the airport. The Ministry also acknowledged that Russian partners played a role in fending off the assault.

Niger’s governing military had initially accused several countries, including Benin, France, and Ivory Coast, of sponsoring the attack. However, no evidence was provided to support these claims. Ivory Coast’s Foreign Ministry denied the allegations, while Benin described them as “not very credible.”

The attack on the airport occurred on January 28, with ISIL claiming responsibility for the assault. A video published online showed several dozen attackers using assault rifles and setting fire to a plane before fleeing.

Niger’s military chief visited the Russian military base in Niamey to express gratitude for the professionalism displayed by Russian forces during the defense of the airport.

Russia has been increasing its presence in the Sahel region, with troops or instructors deployed in Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and other countries. The African Corps is reportedly involved in efforts to combat terrorism and strengthen regional stability.

Niger’s authorities have been fighting the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) and the ISIL affiliate in the Sahel (EIS) since 2012.
