Russia’s Ongoing Conflict with Ukraine: A Shift in Life for Russians
Nearly four years have passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. The conflict has had a significant impact on the country, with millions of Ukrainian refugees fleeing and those remaining facing harsh winter conditions due to Russian missile attacks on energy infrastructure.
According to verified reports, Russian combat deaths have surpassed 186,000, exceeding the losses suffered by the Red Army during the Soviet Union’s involvement in World War II. The conflict has also led to increased artillery barrages, drone strikes, and ground incursions in western Russia bordering Ukraine, including the Kursk and Belgorod regions.
Locals in these areas have become accustomed to the constant bombardment, with many residents stating that they no longer seek shelter during attacks. In fact, 25-year-old Ben Higginbottom, a YouTuber who moved to Kursk with his Russian wife in 2021, noted that locals had grown used to the strikes and would only take shelter if necessary.
However, major cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg have largely remained unaffected by the conflict. The sanctions imposed by Ukraine’s Western allies have caused inconvenience, particularly for everyday expenses like food and cigarettes. As a result, prices have increased significantly, with Andrey, a 30-year-old Muscovite, stating that he is “in shock” due to the rising costs.
Some changes have been observed in Russia, including difficulties in finding certain brands of products, which are now available only through resellers or online platforms. Additionally, the government has introduced strict laws penalizing “fake news” about the invasion and blocked social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, promoting state-backed alternatives instead.
Overall, life for Russians has changed significantly since the conflict began, with varying degrees of impact depending on location and individual circumstances.
