Barcelona’s Yamal Wins Young Sportsperson of the Year Award

Lamine Yamal, an athlete from Barcelona and Spain, has received the Young Sportsperson of the Year award at the Laureus Awards. This is his second award, following his win as Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year in 2025.

The ceremony took place on Monday in Madrid, where tennis players Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz were honored with the Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year awards. Sabalenka, from Belarus, finished atop the women’s tennis rankings after a successful season that included winning two Grand Slam titles at the French Open and US Open. Alcaraz, also from Spain, reclaimed his position as world number one after capturing two Grand Slam titles.

Other notable winners include Toni Kroos, who received the world sporting inspiration award, Nadia Comaneci, who won the lifetime achievement prize, and Chloe Kim, who was awarded the world action sportsperson award. Brazilian Gabriel Araujo was named world sportsperson of the year with a disability.

The ceremony featured hosts Novak Djokovic and Eileen Gu, both former Laureus winners. The awards are presented annually since 2000 and are determined by the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy.
