Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement condemning “criminal attacks” by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North and South Kordofan states, Sudan. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, including women and children. The Saudi government has also accused foreign fighters and weapons of fueling the nearly three-year-old conflict.
According to a statement released on Saturday, “foreign interference” by certain parties is being blamed for the continuation of the war. The statement specifically mentions the influx of illegal weapons, mercenaries, and foreign fighters as contributing factors. However, it does not specify which parties are involved.
The attacks have been part of a series of incidents involving drone raids on humanitarian aid convoys and fuel trucks across North Kordofan. A recent attack on a vehicle transporting displaced families killed at least 24 people, including eight children. The RSF has also been accused of carrying out similar attacks in the past.
The conflict in Sudan has resulted in an estimated 40,000 deaths and pushed over 21 million people into acute food shortages. The Saudi government is calling for the RSF to cease its violations and adhere to humanitarian norms. It is also demanding a ceasefire deal agreed upon by the warring parties in Jeddah in 2023.
Separately, there have been allegations that the United Arab Emirates has been arming and funding the RSF. Sudan filed a case against the UAE at the International Court of Justice last year, accusing it of complicity in genocide committed by the RSF. The UAE has denied these allegations.
