Saudi Arabia condemns foreign interference in Sudan amid RSF attacks

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement condemning “criminal attacks” by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in North and South Kordofan states, Sudan. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of dozens of people, including women and children. The Saudi government has also denounced “foreign interference” by certain parties, citing the continued influx of illegal weapons, mercenaries, and foreign fighters as contributing factors to the ongoing conflict.

The statement did not specify the parties involved, but it came amid allegations that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is arming and funding the RSF. Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the International Court of Justice, accusing it of “complicity in genocide” committed by the RSF. The UAE has denied these allegations.

The conflict in Kordofan has intensified following the fall of el-Fasher to the RSF in October. Fighting between the RSF and Sudan’s army has resulted in an estimated 40,000 deaths and pushed over 21 million people into acute food shortages. The Saudi government is calling for an immediate ceasefire and adherence to humanitarian norms.

Separately, Saudi Arabia has also accused the UAE of backing the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) in Yemen. The STC launched a major offensive last December, seeking to establish a separate state, which resulted in a split in Yemen’s internationally-backed government.
