UN Security Council Approves Resolution Calling for Halt to Attacks on Gulf Countries
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states. The measure calls on Iran to immediately cease its attacks on countries in the region.
The resolution was passed with 13 votes in favour, two abstentions, and no dissenting votes. The GCC member states, which include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, submitted the draft resolution to the Security Council.
According to the text of the resolution, Iran is urged to “immediately cease all hostilities” against Gulf countries. The measure does not specify what form these attacks take or who is responsible for them.
The adoption of the resolution marks a significant development in efforts to address tensions between Iran and its neighbours. The GCC member states have long expressed concerns about Iranian activities in the region, including alleged support for militant groups and military build-ups along their borders.
The UN Security Council’s decision to adopt the resolution reflects the growing international concern over the situation in the Gulf. The measure is likely to be seen as a significant step towards de-escalating tensions between Iran and its neighbours.
