Senegal Secures Top Spot in Group D, DR Congo Advances to Knockout Stage
In the latest round of matches at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, Senegal defeated Benin 3-0, securing the top spot in Group D and advancing to the knockout stage. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) also secured a spot in the next round after beating Botswana 3-0.
Senegal’s victory was led by goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Habib Diallo, with Cherif Ndiaye scoring a late penalty. The team’s captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, was sent off in the second half following a VAR review.
The DRC’s win over Botswana was marked by outstanding performances from playmaker Gael Kakuta and Nathanael Mbuku. Kakuta scored two goals, including one from a back heel, while Mbuku netted the team’s opener.
With Senegal topping Group D on goal difference, they will face the third-place finisher in Group E in the next round. The DRC will play Algeria, who finished second in Group D. The winner of this match could potentially advance to the quarterfinals against Nigeria.
Benin secured a spot in the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, earning a meeting with Egypt in the next round.
