Serena Williams to Compete in Queen’s Club Championships
Serena Williams, a 44-year-old American tennis player, has announced her competitive return to the game after a nearly four-year absence. She will compete in women’s doubles at this month’s Queen’s Club Championships in the United Kingdom.
Williams received a wildcard entry for the competition and will partner with 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko. The tournament is seen as a warm-up for Wimbledon, the year’s third Grand Slam.
According to reports, Williams has been training and has been spotted practicing with several current players, including Lindsay Davenport. Davenport believes that Williams could make an appearance at her home Grand Slam, the US Open, in a couple of months.
Other tennis players, including Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka, have expressed their excitement about Williams’s return to the game. Osaka stated that Williams’s comeback will bring more attention to tennis, while Sabalenka described Williams as “a legend” and said she is looking forward to playing against her.
Williams has won numerous titles throughout her career, including seven Wimbledon titles and six at the US Open. She stepped away from singles competition in 2022 but has been eligible to compete again since February after re-registering for a mandatory antidoping programme.
The Queen’s Club Championships will start on Monday, with Williams set to play “with a partner to be announced in due course”.
