Silence Broken in Colombia: New Episode Released

Former Colombian National Army Soldiers Confess to Extrajudicial Killings

In a development related to Colombia’s ongoing peace process, former members of the national army have confessed to participating in extrajudicial killings as part of the country’s efforts to address its decades-long armed conflict. The victims’ families were informed about their involvement in the so-called “falsos positivos” – extrajudicial executions where innocent civilians were killed and then falsely presented as combat casualties by the government.

The Colombian state established the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) under the 2016 peace agreement with FARC-EP rebels. The JEP is a justice mechanism that focuses on transitional and restorative justice, prioritizing victims’ rights and ensuring due process guarantees. It provides two pathways: one for those who acknowledge responsibility and contribute to reparation, and another for those who do not.

Over 17,000 individuals are currently appearing before the JEP, including former FARC-EP members, military personnel, and civilians. The jurisdiction has issued indictments, delivered sentences, and waived criminal prosecution for non-most-responsible parties. This episode is part of a broader effort to hold perpetrators accountable for human rights violations committed during Colombia’s armed conflict.

The victims’ families have shared their experiences with the JEP, providing insight into the suffering and anguish caused by these killings. The testimonies are being documented as part of the peace process, aiming to provide closure and justice for those affected.
