Singapores Economy Surpasses Expectations Amid Government Concerns Over Iran Tensions

Singapore’s Economy Experiences Strong Growth in First Quarter

The Ministry of Trade and Industry reported that Singapore’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, surpassing an official advance estimate of 4.6 percent. On a seasonally adjusted basis, GDP grew 1 percent from the previous quarter.

According to the ministry, strong performances in the wholesale trade, manufacturing, and finance and insurance sectors drove the growth. Specifically, robust demand for AI-related products led to increases in the machinery, equipment & supplies segment of the wholesale trade sector, as well as the electronics and precision engineering clusters within the manufacturing sector.

The ministry maintained its 2026 growth outlook at between 2 and 4 percent, citing “downside risks” from rising energy and fertilizer prices due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to most shipping. However, it noted that AI-related demand has remained robust and is expected to continue supporting regional economies throughout the year.

Analysts have expressed mixed views on the implications of the crisis in the Middle East for Singapore’s economy. Khoon Goh, head of Asia research for ANZ, stated that the GDP figures may not fully reflect the impact of the crisis, but the solid Q1 growth sets a strong base for the rest of 2026.

The United Nations has cut its 2026 growth forecast for the global economy to 2.5 percent due to the fallout from the conflict. Local economists have raised expectations for growth in Singapore, with some forecasting around 3.6 percent growth for the year.

Singapore’s strong performance in AI production and semiconductor manufacturing has played a significant role in its economic growth. The country accounts for about 10 percent of global semiconductor production and 20 percent of semiconductor chip equipment production globally.
