Bus Collision in Yemen Results in 16 Fatalities
A bus collided with a truck in southern Yemen on Tuesday, resulting in at least 16 fatalities, according to local authorities. The incident occurred in the Lahmar area of the Al-Mahfad district, which is a key transit route connecting the provinces of Abyan and Shabwa.
The accident involved two vehicles, a bus and a truck, and resulted in a fire that engulfed the small bus. According to Turkiye’s Anadolu news agency, there were no survivors among the passengers. The Reuters news agency reported that security officials stated the cause of the accident was “improper overtaking” on a bend in the road.
The incident has been confirmed as the second-deadliest traffic accident in Yemen in recent years and the worst so far in 2026. In comparison, last year’s crash in Abyan province resulted in 17 fatalities. Local observers have pointed to several factors contributing to high death tolls in road accidents, including the country’s rugged terrain and neglected road infrastructure.
The ongoing conflict between government forces and Houthi rebels has left Yemen’s road networks in a state of disrepair for over a decade. The violence and instability that began in 2014 have had a lasting impact on the country’s infrastructure.
