Slovenia’s Governing Party Sees Narrow Lead in Parliamentary Election, Exit Poll Suggests
A recent exit poll has indicated that Slovenia’s governing Freedom Movement (GS) party is on track to secure 29.9% of the votes and 30 seats in the country’s parliament. This represents a decline from their previous result of 41 seats. The opposition Slovenian Democratic Party, led by Janez Jansa, is expected to come second with 27 seats.
According to the Mediana polling agency, which conducted the exit poll, GS will need to form additional coalition partners in order to secure a majority government. Incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob called on citizens to cast their ballots, stating that “democracy and Slovenia’s sovereignty cannot be taken for granted any more.”
Jansa welcomed the exit poll results, saying he would wait for the final result before making further statements. He noted that those who support the current government may be satisfied with the parallel results, while those seeking change will have to wait until the final outcome is known.
The Slovenian Democratic Party has a history of producing prime ministers, including Jansa’s previous stint from 2020 to 2022. The election was marred by controversy earlier this week, following allegations that Jansa met with officials from the Israeli spy firm Black Cube in December. Golob expressed concern over foreign interference in the elections, stating it is “something unheard of.”
