Socialist Partys Manuel Azevedo Seguro wins Portuguese presidential election

Portugal’s Presidential Election: Antonio Seguro Leads in Run-Off Vote

With 95 percent of votes counted, Antonio Jose Seguro has secured a significant lead in the presidential election, garnering 66 percent of the vote. His opponent, Andre Ventura, trails behind at 34 percent. The results come after a run-off vote between the two candidates.

Seguro, a 63-year-old member of the centre-left Socialist Party, is ahead in the polls with 95 percent of votes counted. Ventura, a 43-year-old far-right candidate from the Chega party, had trailed Seguro in opinion polls before the election. Despite this, he has maintained a strong presence and secured a significant share of the vote.

The turnout for the election has been steady, with voters braving recent storms to cast their ballots. The postponement of voting in three municipal councils due to floods is expected to have a minimal impact on the overall result.

Seguro’s campaign focused on his ability to mediate political crises and defend democratic values. He received support from prominent conservatives who were concerned about Ventura’s populist tendencies. Meanwhile, Ventura has gained increased support despite losing the election, reflecting the growing influence of the far right in Portugal and Europe.

The new president will succeed outgoing conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in early March. The role is largely ceremonial, but it holds key powers, including the ability to dissolve parliament under certain circumstances.
