Somalia takes proactive role in shaping global security discussions

Somalia Elected to Key UN and African Union Bodies

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) have welcomed Somalia as a new member, marking a significant shift in the country’s role in global security discussions. The election of Somalia to these bodies is seen as a major milestone in its diplomatic trajectory.

For decades, Somalia was largely the subject of international security debates, with few opportunities for participation. However, this has changed with Somalia’s recent membership in both the UNSC and AU PSC. This development reflects the country’s growing maturity in its diplomatic and security institutions, as well as its rebuilding of international credibility after years of conflict.

Somalia’s new role on these councils carries significant implications. As a member of the UNSC and AU PSC, Somalia will now be part of the process that determines policies affecting its own security and development. This participation is expected to strengthen state-building in several ways, including reinforcing institutional capacity within Somalia’s foreign policy apparatus, promoting transparency and accountability through engagement with multilateral norms, and aligning Somalia more closely with international legal and diplomatic standards.

Somalia’s membership also carries representational significance beyond its borders. As a member of the UNSC and AU PSC, Somalia now represents the interests of the African continent, the Arab and Muslim world, and the least developed countries (LDCs). This role is significant as these categories of states have often been overshadowed by the priorities of more powerful nations.

The seats at the UNSC and AU PSC will directly reinforce Somalia’s state-building process. Active involvement in shaping international peace also reflects and supports the way peace and security agendas are being handled domestically. The year 2026 represents a rare convergence of opportunity for Somalia, with its dual presence on these councils providing a diplomatic platform unmatched in its recent history.
