India’s T20 World Cup Campaign in Jeopardy After Defeat to South Africa
India suffered a 76-run defeat at the hands of South Africa in their first Super Eight stage match of the tournament, falling short of the target of 188 runs. The defending champions were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs while chasing the target at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India on Sunday.
South Africa’s bowlers put on a strong display against India’s batting lineup, with captain Aiden Markram taking four wickets for 22 runs off 3.5 overs. The Proteas’ fielders also played a crucial role in dismissing several Indian batsmen, including Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma.
India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek Sharma tried to rebuild the innings after losing several key players, but were eventually dismissed for 15 runs each. Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube managed a brief partnership of 35 runs before Dube fell for 42 off 37 deliveries.
South Africa’s David Miller played a crucial role in stabilizing their innings with a score of 63 runs off 35 balls, while Tristan Stubbs contributed 44 not out off 24 balls. The Proteas’ total of 187-7 was enough to secure the win.
The loss propels South Africa to the top of Group 1 in the Super Eight stage, with India at the bottom with a net run rate of -3.80. To qualify for the semifinals, India must now win their next two games against West Indies and Zimbabwe, who will face each other on Monday.
