South African Men Return Home After Being Recruited for Ukraine War Effort
A group of South African men, aged between 20 and 39, have returned to their hometowns in Durban after being recruited by Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, under false pretences. The recruits claim they were lured into the war effort with promises of security training, but instead found themselves conscripted into a paramilitary group and sent to fight in Ukraine.
According to reports, the men were told they would be trained as VIP bodyguards, but later discovered that Zuma-Sambudla had never left South Africa. They claim she and her associates were paid at least 14 million rand by Russia’s Wagner Group to secure their services.
The recruits, who have chosen to remain anonymous, spoke of the harsh conditions they faced in Ukraine, including being forced to burn their belongings and having their documents confiscated. Many of them returned home with little more than the clothes on their backs.
The controversy surrounding Zuma-Sambudla’s recruitment drive has led to an investigation by the police, who have opened a case against her. The MK Party, which she represented in parliament, has since distanced itself from the scandal.
President Cyril Ramaphosa intervened in the matter, reaching out to Russian President Vladimir Putin for support, and eventually convincing him to allow the recruits’ repatriation. However, some of the men’s families are now fearful of reprisals from the recruiters and possible prosecution under South African law.
The Wagner Group has been linked to several high-profile recruitment scandals in Africa, and the incident highlights concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by organized groups. The South African government has launched an investigation into the matter, with officials vowing to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
