Naegohyang Women’s FC to Play Suwon FC Women in Asian Champions League Semifinal
On May 20, Naegohyang Women’s FC from North Korea will face off against Suwon FC Women from South Korea in the Asian Champions League semifinals. This match marks a rare occasion for a North Korean sports team to compete in the South, with the last instance occurring in 2018.
According to reports, hundreds of South Koreans have expressed interest in attending the game and supporting Naegohyang Women’s FC. The Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation (KCRC) has enlisted approximately 300 volunteers, while other groups such as the Korean Sharing Movement and the Hankyoreh Foundation for Reunification and Culture have also recruited fans.
The event is significant given the ongoing tensions between North and South Korea, with their conflict dating back to the 1950-53 war. However, the KCRC has stated that Naegohyang’s visit brings hope for reconciliation and peace.
Logistical arrangements are in place for the match, with no away fans allowed due to North Korean travel restrictions. The Asian Football Confederation rules prohibit political expression in stadiums, which may impact how fans show their support for Naegohyang Women’s FC.
The winner of the semifinal will advance to the final on May 23 against either Melbourne City from Australia or Tokyo Verdy Beleza from Japan.
