South Sudan Launches Offensive Against Opposition Forces

South Sudan Announces Military Operation Amid Fears for Civilian Safety

The South Sudanese army has launched a major military operation against opposition forces in Jonglei state, sparking concerns about civilian safety. The operation, dubbed “Operation Enduring Peace,” aims to recapture towns recently seized by opposition forces and restore law and order.

According to the army’s spokesman, Lul Ruai Koang, civilians have been ordered to evacuate three counties in Jonglei state immediately, with aid groups given 48 hours to leave the area. The operation is set to commence on Sunday.

The government has denied that it is at war, stating that its goal is to stop the advancement of opposition forces. However, a senior army commander was recently filmed urging his troops to kill civilians and destroy property during operations in Jonglei, drawing criticism from the United Nations and other organizations.

The conflict in South Sudan began in December, when a coalition of opposition forces seized government outposts in central Jonglei. The region is home to the Nuer ethnic group, which has historically been an opposition stronghold. Opposition leader Riek Machar, who was made the most senior vice president under a 2018 peace agreement, is currently facing treason charges over his alleged role in a military attack on a government garrison.

The International Crisis Group’s project director for the Horn of Africa, Alan Boswell, has stated that South Sudan has returned to war. The situation remains volatile, with sporadic fighting and concerns about civilian safety.

The United Nations has warned against the risk of mass violence amid the ongoing conflict in Jonglei state. The government has relied on aerial bombardments to beat back a rebellion that analysts say is gaining momentum across multiple states.
