Southampton stands by coach Eckert amid controversy over missed World Cup match

Southampton Manager Apologizes for Spygate Scandal

Tonda Eckert, Southampton’s head coach, has issued an apology for his role in the “spygate” scandal that led to the club’s expulsion from the Championship playoffs. The incident involved the observation of Middlesbrough’s training sessions and other similar incidents during the season.

Eckert acknowledged responsibility for the actions, stating that he is accountable for everything that occurred within the football club. He also claimed that observing other teams was routine in his previous experience in Italy, but admitted that this was not an excuse for his behavior in the English second tier.

The Football Association has opened an investigation into the matter, and Eckert may face disciplinary action. The independent disciplinary commission of the English Football League ruled that there was a “contrived and determined plan from the top down to gain a competitive advantage” through spying missions.

As a result of the scandal, Southampton received a four-point deduction that will be applied to the 2026-27 Championship table. The club’s owner, Dragan Solak, has expressed support for Eckert, stating that he believes the manager did not intentionally break any rules and that the club was “over-sentenced”.

Solak also claimed that Eckert had been subject to a media witch-hunt and that the board is fully behind him. The chairman stated that the club’s objective is to promote back to the Premier League, and that Eckert is the man to take them forward.

Southampton will not be participating in the playoff final due to the scandal, but they have secured a spot in the Championship for the 2026-27 season.
