Spain Closes Airspace to US Planes Involved in Iran Conflict
The Spanish government has confirmed that it will no longer allow US military aircraft to use its airspace as part of the ongoing conflict with Iran. Defence Minister Margarita Robles made the announcement on Monday, citing the country’s long-standing opposition to the war.
According to sources, this decision was made clear to the American military and forces from the outset, and is in line with Spain’s position on the matter. The minister stated that neither the US nor its allies are authorised to use Spanish airspace for actions related to the conflict.
This move follows earlier statements by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who described the war as “unjustifiable” and “dangerous”. In October, the Spanish parliament approved a law banning the sale of arms and military equipment to Israel, citing concerns over human rights abuses in Gaza.
The US had previously attempted to use jointly operated military bases in southern Spain, but was forced to relocate 15 aircraft after being denied permission. The decision has been seen as a significant escalation of tensions between the two countries.
The European Union has called for de-escalation and protection of civilians in the region, but has not taken a clear stance on the conflict. This move by Spain marks it as one of the most vocal critics of US and Israeli military actions in the Middle East.
