Spurs stun Thunder with 41-point performance by Wembanyama in Game 1

San Antonio Spurs Edge Oklahoma City Thunder in Thrilling Double-Overtime Matchup

The San Antonio Spurs secured a crucial 122-115 road win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in game one of the NBA Western Conference finals on Monday. Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 41 points and 24 rebounds, outdueling Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to secure the victory.

Wembanyama’s performance was instrumental in forcing a second overtime, where he scored nine of the Spurs’ 14 points. He also produced two dunks and a crucial block late in the second overtime to seal the win. The French star played 49 minutes, showcasing his impressive skills on the court.

The Thunder, who were seeking to become the first team to repeat as champions since Golden State in 2017 and 2018, struggled to contain Wembanyama’s efforts. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 24 points but was limited by a sluggish start, while Alex Caruso led the Thunder with 31 points.

The Spurs took an early lead but trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter before rallying to tie the game at 99-99. Wembanyama’s basket with 33.2 seconds left put San Antonio up 101-99, but Gilgeous-Alexander tied it up with a layup and Chet Holmgren blocked Wembanyama’s potential game-winner at the buzzer.

The Thunder clawed back to tie the game, only for Wembanyama to drill a transition three-pointer in the first overtime. The Spurs then took control in the second overtime, securing the win.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson attributed his star player’s motivation to Gilgeous-Alexander receiving his second straight Most Valuable Player trophy before the game. “He’s competitive,” Johnson said. “If you’re a competitor and you see another competitor get rewarded with what you want.”

Wembanyama, who finished third in the MVP voting announced on Sunday, praised his teammates’ effort. “And even though we’ve still got a lot to learn, our effort should be over anybody else’s and tonight we were relentless,” he said.

The Spurs now hold home-court advantage in the best-of-seven series, which will send the winners to the NBA Finals. The Thunder will host game two on Wednesday before the series shifts to San Antonio for games three and four on Friday and Saturday.
