Colombo, Sri Lanka - A combined cricket team from India and Pakistan will face off against Sri Lanka on Sunday at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. The match marks a significant event in the sport’s history, as it was formed to support Sri Lanka ahead of the 1996 Cricket World Cup. The two teams have a long-standing rivalry, with few sporting events carrying the weight and anticipation of an India-Pakistan cricket match.
The Pakistani government had initially ordered its team not to face India at the ongoing T20 World Cup, causing brief chaos in the tournament. However, after a week of negotiations, the Pakistani government reversed its decision, allowing the match to proceed as scheduled.
If the boycott had gone ahead, it could have had significant consequences for Pakistan, the International Cricket Council (ICC), and Sri Lanka. The crisis was averted, and Sri Lanka is now poised to reap benefits in its financial landscape, diplomatic standing, and community.
The tourism and hospitality industry in Sri Lanka is expected to see an influx of fans from India and Pakistan, with hotels in and around Colombo fully booked ahead of the tournament. However, after the boycott announcement, hotel room rates increased by 300-400 percent at five-star establishments in Colombo. Local businesses, including street vendors and high-end restaurants, are also hoping for increased footfall and spending over the weekend.
The match is expected to create employment opportunities in the media, event management, security, and transportation industries, albeit temporarily. The event has been recognized as a significant opportunity by freelance journalist and broadcaster Asanka Hadirampela, who will be working on the match as a Sinhala language commentator for the World Cup.
