Yemen’s Digital Workforce Sees Growth Despite Challenges
In Mukalla, Yemen, a hub for digital work, entrepreneurs, remote freelancers, and students gather at the Mukalla Creative Hub. The space provides fast, reliable internet thanks to Starlink satellite services. Four devices power the hub, delivering speeds of 100 to 150 Mbps.
Hamzah Bakhdar, a digital freelancer, notes that Starlink allows users to stay constantly connected in a country where war has devastated telecommunications and eroded salaries. Internet access is also limited due to the Houthi rebels’ control over major internet providers, which blocks websites deemed linked to their opponents.
Mohammed Helmi, a video editor and motion graphics designer, credits fast internet at the cafe for his ability to work on projects for clients in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and the United States without worrying about losing connection or missing deadlines. He previously faced disruptions due to data running out on his laptop.
Starlink is operated by SpaceX and delivers internet through a ground dish linked to low-orbit satellites. The service is available in Yemen after an agreement was signed with the internationally recognized government in September 2024. However, the kits cost around $500, making it unaffordable for most Yemenis, who live below the poverty line.
University students, like Mariam, face difficulties accessing internet services due to high prices and limited affordability. Many rely on vouchers from local providers to access Starlink services, which are still out of reach for those who cannot afford devices.
