Storms Bring Fatalities and Disruption to Iberian Peninsula
A series of storms has affected the Iberian Peninsula, resulting in fatalities, damage to infrastructure, and power outages. The latest storm, Storm Leonardo, has brought torrential rain and strong winds to Portugal and Spain.
In Portugal, a 70-year-old man died after floodwaters swept his vehicle off a road near a dam in the southern region of Alentejo. Authorities have confirmed that several fatalities have occurred due to flooding this year.
In Spain’s Malaga province, a girl remains missing after being swept away by the Turvilla River while trying to rescue her dog. The dog was found safe, but the girl is still unaccounted for. Emergency teams resumed their search on Thursday morning.
The State Meteorological Agency has warned that Storm Marta is expected to reach the region this weekend. Reconstruction efforts after previous storms may exceed 4 billion euros.
Residents in southern Portugal have been forced to wade through waist-deep water due to flooding caused by a series of storms. Restaurant terraces and shopfronts were submerged, with some property owners using sandbags to protect their homes.
Andalusia’s emergency services reported attending over one million incidents by midnight on Wednesday. Authorities have confirmed that 14 rivers and 10 dams are at risk of overflowing due to the severe conditions.
In Portugal, the National Civil Protection authority has registered at least 70 incidents related to Storm Leonardo. The region continues to monitor the impact of the storm.
