Strait of Hormuz tensions escalate amid rising regional military presence

US Fires at Iranian-Flagged Container Ship in Strait of Hormuz

On April 20, a US naval vessel fired at an Iranian-flagged container ship near the northern Arabian Sea, resulting in its seizure. The incident occurred amid the ongoing blockade of Iranian ports by the United States.

A similar scenario played out in the 1980s during the Tanker War between Iran and Iraq. In 1984, Iraq attacked Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf, seeking to cripple its economy. Iran retaliated by firing at oil tankers belonging to Iraq and its allies. The conflict escalated into a naval war, with both countries targeting each other’s vessels.

The US responded to the attacks by launching Operation Earnest Will in July 1987, which involved reflagging Kuwaiti tankers with the US flag to provide protection for shipping lanes. The operation involved dozens of US warships escorting tankers and conducting special operations against Iranian mine-layers.

In April 1988, the US frigate USS Samuel B Roberts was damaged by an Iranian mine in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident led to Operation Praying Mantis, which aimed to destroy Iranian vessels. The tanker war ended with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire agreement between Iran and Iraq in August 1988.

The current hostilities between the US and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz began when Tehran closed passage to all vessels after the US and Israel bombed the country. On March 4, the incident led to the seizure of the Iranian-flagged container ship by a US naval vessel.

According to reports, the conflict has resulted in increased tensions in the region. The University of Texas’s Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law reported that Iran threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz during the 1980s war but did not do so due to its own economic dependence on exporting oil through the strait.

The incident highlights the ongoing naval tensions in the region, with both countries targeting each other’s vessels. The US has launched a naval operation to protect shipping lanes and prevent Iranian attacks on tankers.
