Drone Attack on Market in Sudan’s Kordofan Region Kills at Least 28 People
A drone-fired missile attack on a market in central Sudan’s Kordofan region has resulted in the deaths of at least 28 people and injuries to dozens more, according to Emergency Lawyers. The group reported that the attack occurred on Sunday when the market was crowded with civilians.
The area where the attack took place is currently a focal point of conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has been attempting to encircle the capital of North Kordofan, el-Obeid, for months. The region has seen an increase in drone attacks as both sides fight over the country’s vital east-west axis.
The attack on Sunday is not the first incident of its kind; a similar drone strike occurred last week near the city of Rahad, killing at least 24 people, including eight children. A World Food Programme aid convoy was also hit by drones in the same area just one day prior to the market attack.
Fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese military began in April 2023 and has resulted in significant loss of life, with at least 40,000 people killed and 12 million displaced. The World Health Organization estimates that the true death toll could be much higher due to limited access to affected areas.
The United Nations Human Rights Office has reported on various incidents of violence committed by both sides during the conflict. The RSF’s offensive in Darfur in late October included widespread atrocities, which were described as war crimes and possible crimes against humanity.
The Kordofan region remains a volatile area with ongoing hostilities between the warring parties.
